Unbreakable Vows: The No-Cheating Rule for Married Women in This Town
Cheating can endanger a marriage, make it impossible for you to trust possible marriage partners, harm your children, and even result in post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety (PTSD).
Adults generally agree that infidelity is wrong, but between 39% and 52% of us may have engaged in it at some point in our lives.
According to research, 13% of women are unfaithful to their spouse on average, compared to 20% of men.
Onna is a Local Government Area in the Akwa Ibom region of eastern Nigeria. Men in this region have a reputation for being serial cheaters, and the locals accept this as the norm.
However, if their women are caught cheating, they may pay the highest price and even lose their lives.
“It depends on the family some people have it in their family and some do not have it. That is why if you are from that family or you got married into that family the women will not cheat on their husband. Because if you cheat on your husband that thing will definitely attack you and eventually you will die.” As stated by an Onna resident.
This belief is so strong in this town that any woman who cheats could lose her life.
However, this is unusual because you might wonder who cheats with whom, given that a husband is free to cheat as many times as he wants.
A term known as “Ekpo Nkanwo” is a deity that varies depending on the family; some people have it while others do not. Some of the men in this group can freely cheat because of one of their beliefs.
“Men are allowed to marry as many wives as they want.” Onna resident stated
That is the only way to survive the crime.
According to the resident, women are not supposed to cheat, and if they do, they run the risk of being killed unless they confess to what they did so that the ancient people can perform some rituals before you survive.
“That is why, because if you’re from that family or you are married to that family, the women will not cheat, if they cheat chances are that they may get killed, unless they confess what they did so people can perform some rituals to the ancient people before you survive.” One of the town’s residents testifies.
The Ekpo Nkanwo attack the woman who has cheated, and no woman will be spared when it comes for you.
Many women, however, have survived after submitting themselves, pleading for their cheating, revealing the names of those with whom they cheated, and paying a certain price depending on the ritual performed.
Something peculiar about this town is that there is a strong Christian presence, but many Christians will not publicly admit that they believe in this deity.
According to the survey, the top two countries with cheating women are Nigeria (62%), and Thailand (59%).
