Kitui Central Member of Parliament Makali Mulu has issued a stark warning about a potential impeachment threat facing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Tuesday, August 6, the Wiper party lawmaker suggested that a group of Mt Kenya MPs are making “serious moves” towards initiating an impeachment motion against Gachagua.

Mulu advised the Deputy President to prepare for this possibility, stating, “Where there is smoke, even if you don’t see the fire, there is fire somewhere.”

He emphasized that while he hasn’t been asked to sign any motion, he is certain that significant steps are being taken behind the scenes.

The root of this potential impeachment, according to Mulu, lies in a power struggle between Gachagua and certain MPs from the Mt Kenya region.

These lawmakers are reportedly determined to demonstrate to Gachagua that he cannot influence their re-election prospects in 2027.

This move appears to be an attempt to assert their independence from the Deputy President’s political influence.

Mulu also pointed out that Gachagua’s position has been further complicated by the recent developments in Kenya’s political landscape, particularly the new working relationship between President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

This alliance, he suggests, could potentially shift the balance of power within parliament.

The Wiper MP expressed confidence in the likelihood of such an impeachment succeeding, citing the numbers of MPs from central Kenya, the strength of UDA MPs, and the newfound cooperation between ODM and UDA.

He concluded by reiterating his advice to Gachagua: “The DP’s case is a closed case. So he has to prepare.”
