In Summary:
1) Kalonzo Musyoka, a co-principal of the Azimio coalition, called for national unity to uphold justice, democracy, and peace.
2) He criticized the police for their alleged role in violent crackdowns on protesters, citing casualties and property damage.
Kalonzo Musyoka, co-principal of the Azimio coalition, delivered a passionate plea on Wednesday for Kenyans to unite and safeguard the fundamental values of justice, democracy, and peace.
Addressing the press, he emphasized the coalition’s unwavering commitment to advancing the interests of all citizens amidst ongoing nationwide protests.
“We call on all Kenyans to unite and defend the values of justice, democracy, and peace for which this country is known,” Kalonzo declared.
He commended the younger generation for mobilizing disenfranchised Kenyans to exercise their constitutional right to protest.
However, Kalonzo expressed grave concern over the alleged role of the police in escalating tensions.
He accused law enforcement of fatally shooting over 39 protesters and injuring hundreds more during recent demonstrations.
“The violence, looting, and destruction witnessed were orchestrated and sponsored by individuals in positions of power,” Kalonzo asserted.
He claimed these actions were intended to undermine the nationwide protests led by the younger generation.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) corroborated Kalonzo’s claims, reporting that from June 18 to July 1, 2024, at least 39 people had died and 361 were injured in protests against the Finance Bill.
KNCHR chairperson Roseline Odede highlighted the abrupt escalation of peaceful demonstrations into violent clashes on June 25.
“The protests resulted in numerous fatalities, injuries, and significant property damage,” Odede stated.
She further condemned the reported cases of enforced disappearances and the widespread arrests of demonstrators, with 627 individuals detained during the unrest.
