Although Harris’ campaign has not officially confirmed her refusal, it has previously suggested that participation in the Fox News debate was unlikely. The campaign has stated that Harris will engage in two presidential debates and one vice presidential debate.
“Assuming Donald Trump actually shows up on September 10 to debate Vice President Harris, then Governor Walz will see JD Vance on October 1 and the American people will have another opportunity to see the vice president and Donald Trump on the debate stage in October,” campaign communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement, according to the Hill.
Trump said he expected Harris’s refusal, attributing it to her difficulty in defending her record. He criticized her for past statements on fracking and her role as a “Border Czar,” despite her lack of responsibility for border control.
Trump remarked, “I am not surprised by this development because I feel that she knows it is very difficult, at best, for her to defend her record setting Flip-Flopping on absolutely everything she once believed in.”
In addition to the presidential debates, a debate between Sen. JD Vance and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz is scheduled for October 1 on CBS News.
Vance has stated his desire for more debates, though it remains unclear if additional vice presidential debates will be organized.
These developments follow President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race last month after a poor debate performance against Trump.
Initially, Trump canceled their second debate but has now committed to participating in the ABC News debate.
