  • Incident adds to recent spike in road accidents, following a fatal bus crash earlier this month.

A tragic road accident in Timau, Meru County, on Saturday evening, June 22, claimed the lives of at least six people after a lorry veered off the Meru-Nanyuki road and struck pedestrians.

According to Buuri West Sub-County Police Commander Laura Imbacha, the driver lost control of the lorry, causing it to careen off the road and into pedestrians walking nearby.

The impact resulted in the immediate death of four adult males and two juveniles, with several others sustaining injuries.

These injured pedestrians were swiftly transported to various medical facilities in the vicinity for urgent medical attention.

“On reaching the accident site, the driver lost control of the vehicle, colliding with several pedestrians before the lorry landed in a ditch. Sadly, four adult males and two juveniles lost their lives on the spot, while several injured pedestrians were rushed to nearby hospitals by bystanders,” Imbacha explained during a press briefing.

The deceased were later transferred to the mortuary at Nanyuki General Hospital.

This tragic incident follows closely on the heels of another deadly accident earlier in the month, where four individuals lost their lives in the Gof Chopa area along the Marsabit-Moyale Highway.

In that instance, a bus also lost control, causing it to overturn and resulting in fatalities and multiple injuries.

Marsabit County Police Commander Nyambu Mwakio, confirming the earlier accident, noted that among the deceased were two men, a woman, and a young girl, while 41 others sustained various injuries.
