Tragic Collision: Kenyan Lorry Wrecks Multiple Vehicles in Tanzania, Claiming 25 Lives

In a devastating incident on Saturday, tragedy struck Ngaramtoni, Arusha, Tanzania, as a collision involving a Kenyan lorry and multiple vehicles led to the loss of at least 25 lives and left several others injured.

Reports indicate that the lorry, bearing Kenyan number plates and affiliated with a construction company, collided with several vehicles, including a Nissan Caravan, Mercedes Benz Saloon, and a Toyota Coaster, all registered in Tanzania.

Additionally, the lorry struck a vehicle transporting students from the New Vision School of Arusha, as well as a public bus.

Senior Tanzanian police officer Awadhi Juma Haji addressed the media, revealing that among the 11 fatalities were a young girl and seven foreign nationals.

He attributed the accident to the lorry’s brake system failure, which led to the collision with vehicles ahead. Authorities have initiated a manhunt for the lorry’s driver, who reportedly fled the scene following the incident.

As of the time of this report, some of the injured victims were receiving medical treatment at the Selian Lutheran Hospital.

Tragically, among the deceased were eight missionaries associated with Youth With a Mission (YWAM), who were on a bus journey from a training session. The bus driver also lost his life in the accident.

In a statement, YWAM expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Our hearts go out to all the families, friends, and team members affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

YWAM further confirmed the loss of their missionaries, stating, “It is with great sadness that we are confirming that 8 of our dearly loved friends and honoured missionaries have passed away as a result of the tragic traffic accident involving multiple vehicles on Saturday, February 24th, near Arusha, Tanzania.”

YWAM did not disclose the specific nationalities of the deceased but assured that efforts were underway to inform their relatives.

In response to the calamity, residents have been urged to extend financial assistance to aid all affected victims.

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu implored relevant authorities to intensify vehicle inspections to prevent similar accidents in the future.

Offering condolences to the bereaved families, President Suluhu emphasized the importance of adherence to traffic regulations among road users.
