The two-thirds gender principle has remained a contentious subject in Kenya, persisting for 13 years since the promulgation of the Kenyan constitution.
Article 27(8) of the Constitution mandates the State to undertake measures ensuring that not more than two-thirds of members in all elective and appointive positions represent the same gender.
Raila, along with the opposition, has consistently urged the legislature and the government to enact measures in line with this principle.
The recent meeting between Raila and CS Jumwa, despite previous differences resulting in her defection to President William Ruto’s camp, underscores Raila’s concerted efforts to garner support for his African Union (AU) Commission candidacy.
Notably, this meeting transpired a day after Raila and Ruto shared images of their meeting with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni at his Kisoze farm in Uganda, where they sought Museveni’s backing for Raila’s AU bid.
