Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary nominee Opiyo Wandayi has stated that the issues raised by Kenyan youth in recent protests are not new but are consistent with concerns long voiced by the opposition.
Speaking during his vetting by Parliament’s Committee on Appointments on Saturday, Wandayi responded to questions from Kathiani lawmaker Robert Mbui.
Mbui questioned whether Wandayi and other opposition nominees had exploited the recent youth-led demonstrations to secure their government positions.
Wandayi argued that while the manner of protest may differ, the underlying issues remain the same and need addressing in the new, inclusive government under President William Ruto.
Wandayi emphasized that his nomination was not the result of any backroom deals.
He expressed both surprise and honor at being nominated by President Ruto.
“I am very clear in my mind, extremely clear, because I’ve been in this space for quite some time. The Gen Zs, or the youth, were not raising any different issues from the issues we have raised over the years. They could’ve had a different style, but the issues they were raising were pertinent, which we all agree must be dealt with,” he said.
He also clarified that he did not apply for an executive role and affirmed his commitment to addressing the concerns raised by the youth and supporting the President’s call for a shift in governance approach.
