The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that the arrests took place in a rented flat in Ndenderu, Kiambu county. During the apprehension, law enforcement seized crucial evidence, including a hatchet and butcher knife, along with six mobile phones and three laptop computers.

Intriguingly, detectives also recovered an assortment of SIM cards from major telecommunication companies Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom, alongside a Kenyan identity card registered under the name Omar Mwamkwaju Juma.

Further scrutiny into the suspects’ background revealed their illegal presence in Kenya. Opia was found in possession of an expired passport, while Asibor claimed to have lost his passport the previous year.

Opia attempted to justify the possession of the hatchet, claiming to have purchased it online for personal protection, according to investigators.

In a grim turn of events, detectives on Sunday uncovered a human head believed to be that of Rita Waeni. The head was found in a dam in Kiambaa, Kiambu county, shedding light on the brutality of the crime.

The discovery followed the earlier finding of the mutilated body of the 20-year-old JKUAT student in a Roysambu apartment on January 14, with her head missing. At that time, police were unable to immediately confirm the victim’s identity.

Subsequently, the victim’s family identified her as Waeni, who had left her aunt’s house in Syokimau to meet a friend. The family, in a statement on January 17, revealed that they received a ransom demand of Ksh. 500,000 delivered from her phone number around 5 am on Sunday.

The caretaker of the apartment made the grim discovery of the student’s body parts inside a trash bag, adding another layer of horror to this tragic incident. The investigation into this shocking murder continues as the nation grapples with the heinous details emerging from the Roysambu crime scene.
