- Tongaren MP John Chakati launches an initiative urging President William Ruto to consider appointing Kalonzo Musyoka to a government position within Kenya Kwanza.
- Chakati underscores Kalonzo’s diplomatic background and expresses doubts about his ability to lead the opposition effectively, particularly with Raila Odinga’s potential exit from politics.
Tongaren MP John Chakati, affiliated with the FORD-Kenya Party under the Kenya Kwanza coalition, has urged President William Ruto to consider offering a government role to Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper Party.
Chakati, also serving as the Secretary General of FORD-Kenya, expressed his opinion during a morning interview, suggesting that Kalonzo might not possess the necessary qualities to lead the opposition after Raila Odinga’s potential departure from politics.
Chakati emphasized Kalonzo’s diplomatic background, stating that his skills are better suited for governmental responsibilities, given his experience and decision-making abilities.
“The blood of KANU runs in him, the blood of diplomacy, the blood of government. He is a person of diplomacy, decision-making, and managing affairs,” remarked the MP, highlighting Kalonzo’s inclination towards diplomacy and managing governmental affairs, suggesting that these qualities align more with a governmental role than leading the opposition.
Furthermore, Chakati pointed out Kalonzo’s historical reluctance to take firm stances on contentious issues, indicating that his leadership style might not be well-suited for opposition dynamics.
According to the MP, Kalonzo’s position in politics has been more circumstantial than driven by a natural inclination towards opposition leadership.
“While Kalonzo has expressed interest in assuming leadership within the Azimio alliance following Raila Odinga’s potential exit,” Chakati remarked, “I do not see Kalonzo being able to step into his shoes even 15%.”

Kalonzo’s reassurances during a political event in Homa Bay County did little to dispel doubts about his readiness to lead, especially in the wake of Raila’s announcement that he intends to stay active in Kenyan politics, regardless of his potential appointment to the African Union Commission, according to the MP.
As speculations regarding Raila’s political future continue, the debate over who will lead the opposition and the Azimio alliance intensifies, with Chakati’s call for Kalonzo’s inclusion in the government adding another layer to Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
