- Kisumu-based lawyer and court clerk arrested for soliciting a Ksh.500,000 bribe.
- The duo claimed the money was for a favorable judgment from Presiding Judge Lady Justice Aburili.
A Kisumu-based Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Clifford Gwada, and court clerk, Zakayo Wambogo, have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for soliciting a Ksh.500,000 bribe from a litigant.
Lady Justice Aburili, who has since recorded a statement with the EACC, revealed that she was informed about the money being withdrawn by Peter Warindu and Company Advocates, where Gwada is employed.
The funds were then handed to Wambogo for onward transmission to her, which she was unaware of.
Gwada and Wambogo allegedly received the bribe while pretending to act on behalf of Presiding Judge Lady Justice Aburili.
They claimed the money was an inducement for the Judge to deliver a favorable judgment in a case she decided on May 17, 2024.
In a public statement, it was noted, “She interviewed the implicated Court Assistant and the Advocate in an open court during which they admitted having received the money and divided it amongst themselves.”
The suspects are currently detained at Kisumu Railways police station awaiting further action.
