In Summary:

  • Kenya Power has announced August 31, 2024, as the final deadline for updating prepaid token meters to prevent service disruptions.
  • Customers are urged to purchase tokens to receive update codes and can access them through SMS or the self-service platform.

Kenya Power has set August 31, 2024, as the deadline for updating prepaid (token) meters, urging all prepaid customers to ensure their meters are updated to avoid service interruptions.

The company emphasized that all targeted meters have been scheduled for updates, and customers will receive update codes upon purchasing a new token.

In a statement, Kenya Power outlined the steps for the update process: customers should buy a token for any amount (KSh 25, 30, 40, etc.), enter the first 20-digit code to reset the meter, followed by the second 20-digit code to complete the update, and then load the new token into the meter.

The utility company is working to update the software of 7.4 million prepaid meters by the deadline.

Kenya Power has been conducting this exercise in phases, notifying customers via SMS when their meters are due for an update.

Additionally, customers can retrieve their update codes by dialing *977# on Kenya Power’s self-service platform, which serves as a backup if the SMS notification is not received.

Responding to customer inquiries on X (formerly Twitter), Kenya Power clarified that the phased approach means that different meters are scheduled for updates at different times, hence not all customers will receive the codes simultaneously.
