In Summary:

  • Kenya Power has instructed customers using prepaid token meters to update their meters by August to continue accessing electricity.
  • The update is part of a global exercise to secure token generation for prepaid meters using the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).

  • Customers will receive SMS codes from Kenya Power to key into their meters after purchasing tokens or directly from the company for updating.

Kenya Power has announced a mandatory update for all prepaid token meters, requiring customers to complete the process by August to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.

The update is a part of an ongoing global initiative to enhance the security of token generation for prepaid meters that utilize the Standard Transfer Specification (STS).

According to Kenya Power Managing Director Joseph Siror, the exercise targets 7.4 million prepaid meters across the country. Meters that fail to update by the deadline will stop accepting tokens, effectively cutting off power supply.

Customers will receive two codes via SMS from Kenya Power when purchasing electricity tokens.

They will be required to key in these codes into their meters following the provided instructions before loading the new token. In some cases, the company will directly send the codes to customers who have not purchased tokens, prompting them to update their meters.

The process is free of charge and straightforward.

Kenya Power has assured customers that the update will not affect existing electricity tokens already loaded into power meters.

However, customers are advised to load any previously purchased tokens before updating their meters to avoid invalidating the power units.

The power provider emphasizes the importance of this exercise in maintaining the security and integrity of the prepaid token system, ensuring a reliable and efficient electricity supply for its customers.
