Kenya exports miraa worth Kes 220m  to Somalia in just four days.

Since the market opened up last weekend, the country has exported 81.4 tonnes of the stimulant to Mogadishu, according to Felix Mutwiri, the head of Miraa Pyrethrum and other Industrial Crops.

“We have so far exported 81.4 tonnes in the last four days and we expect the volumes to grow in the next coming days as more people are cleared to ship out the commodity,” said Mr Mutwiri.

The price of a kilo of miraa in Somalia is currently $23 (Sh2,734), which is still less expensive than the $25 (Sh2,972) that it fetched prior to the market being shut down.

Even if more traders have filed for the licenses, Mr. Mutwiri claimed that 19 of the 22 dealers who had submitted applications for export permissions had already been cleared.

Since Khartoum banned export of the drug as a result of a diplomatic dispute between the two nations, traders have relied on the local market.
