On Friday, Azimio La Umoja, led by principal Kalonzo Musyoka, launched a scathing critique of the government’s proposed 2024/2025 budget, labeling it as seriously misaligned with the nation’s priorities.
Kalonzo, also the leader of the Wiper party, urgently called on the international community to step in and address the contentious budget and Finance Bill.
Addressing the media, Kalonzo urged Kenyans abroad to join in condemning the budget, arguing it neglects the critical needs of the populace.
“In light of these grievous transgressions, we as a coalition urge the international community, and civil society organizations to stand in solidarity with Kenyans,” he stated.
He further encouraged both local and diaspora citizens to speak out against what he described as the Kenya Kwanza regime’s blatant disregard for public welfare.
Azimio also directed its Members of Parliament to spearhead the rejection of the Finance Bill set to be tabled next week.
Highlighting over Ksh1 trillion in dubious budget allocations, Kalonzo pointed out, “The National Treasury has Ksh26 billion more in the name of development, and the State Department for Devolution has an increase of Ksh2.6 billion in development expenditure.”
He noted that the State Department of Housing received an additional Ksh72 billion, surpassing the combined budget of 10 counties.
Kalonzo condemned the government’s ongoing failure to address the real issues facing Kenyans and warned that the proposed taxes would drive the nation into economic turmoil.
“What should Kenyans believe? This is a continuation of Kenya Kwanza’s culture of lies. The Kenya Kwanza regime fails to address the people’s concerns,” he questioned.
Azimio’s press conference came just a day after the National Treasury submitted its 2024/2025 budget proposal to Parliament for approval.
