Businessman Jimi Wanjigi and his assistant were arraigned at the Miliman Law Courts on Tuesday, August, 20.
In Summary:
- Wanjigi was released on a Sh10 million personal bond as the court considers deferring his plea.
- The court also ordered Wanjigi to surrender his passport pending a ruling set for September 12.
Businessman Jimi Wanjigi has been released on a Sh10 million personal bond as a Magistrates Court deliberates on whether to defer his plea on charges of possessing unlicensed firearms.
Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi instructed Wanjigi to surrender his passport to the court as part of the conditions for his release, with a ruling on the matter expected on September 12.
Wanjigi’s legal team, including Senior Counsel Paul Muite, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Willis Otieno, sought to postpone the plea, arguing that their client’s rights had been infringed.
“Allow the plea to be postponed to give us an opportunity to challenge the High Court for the reason that when he was arrested, there was a valid court order,” stated Wanjigi’s defense team.
They referenced a High Court order from Justice Bahati Mwamuye, which had prohibited Wanjigi’s arrest and detention, suggesting that the current proceedings were legally flawed.
The court will issue its decision on the plea deferment next month.
