In Summary:

  • Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua criticizes Coast leaders for their absence at a Mombasa conference addressing drug and alcohol abuse.
  • Gachagua questions the silence of leaders and stresses the urgency of addressing the issue collectively.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed disappointment on Monday, February 26, as Coast leaders were notably absent from the Coast Region Conference on Illicit Alcohol and Narcotic Drugs Abuse in Mombasa.

Gachagua highlighted the significance of the conference in tackling the rampant drug and alcohol abuse afflicting the region’s youth.

During the conference, Gachagua passionately questioned the silence of Coast leaders regarding the destructive impact of drugs on the youth.

“Why are leaders in Coast quiet as our young population is being destroyed by drugs? Why are some not here?” he remarked, emphasizing the importance of every elected leader’s participation in addressing the serious problem.

Gachagua challenged leaders not to fear drug barons but to confront the issue head-on. “If you are afraid of drug barons, I am not afraid of them. If you keep quiet, how will we know where the problem is?” he questioned.

He further urged leaders to discuss drug use with the same fervor as other pressing issues.

“As you talk about the squatter problem, you should also discuss drug use with the same passion. We are ready to help you,” he added, stressing the need for comprehensive discussions and collective action to combat drug abuse.

Gachagua also revealed President William Ruto’s decision to cease the transfer of police officers accused of negligence in combating drug trafficking.

This decision, made in consultation with Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki and Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, reflects a commitment to address the issue effectively.

Gachagua, along with his wife Dorcas Rigathi, has been actively advocating for measures to curb drug and alcohol abuse.

Recent incidents, including the tragic deaths of 17 individuals in Kirinyaga County due to illicit alcohol consumption, underscore the urgency of implementing stringent measures.

The conference provides a crucial platform for stakeholders to collaborate and devise effective strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of drug and alcohol abuse, safeguarding the well-being and future prospects of the region’s youth.
