Ex-Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong Defects to UDA from ODM

Jan 21 (TopNews) – In a significant political move, former Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has shifted his allegiance from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). The announcement was made during an interdenominational church service in Teso, Busia County, on Sunday, January 21.

During the service, attended by President William Ruto and key members of the Kenya Kwanza administration, Ojaamong pledged his commitment to working with the ruling UDA party to advance the government’s development agenda.

He stated, “From today, I’ve joined UDA, and I expect to be in government fully. The best way to get better development projects is by supporting the government.”

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba applauded Ojaamong for his decision to join UDA and urged fellow members of the political outfit to embrace him.

Namwamba remarked, “Your Excellency Ojaamong has made a good decision. Let’s support him as he joins the UDA house.”

Ojaamong, a longstanding supporter and member of ODM, announced his departure from the party earlier in the week, citing ideological differences.

In a resignation letter, he explained, “My decision is premised on the fact that my continued membership of this outfit… is no longer tenable due to a clash of ideological beliefs… and by the fact that my political convictions no longer have convergence with that of the ODM party, its values & political practices.”

Having served as the member of parliament for Amagoro Constituency on an ODM ticket in the 2007 General Election, Ojaamong went on to successfully secure the Busia governor’s seat in 2013, holding the position until the end of his term in 2022.

In the August 2022 polls, he vied for the Teso South parliamentary seat but was defeated by Mary Emaase of UDA.
