In Summary:
- DCI detectives, led by Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto, accessed CCTV footage capturing Kelvin Kiptum’s movements prior to his fatal accident.
- Kiptum was observed visiting three different restaurants on the evening of Sunday, February 11, shedding light on his activities before the tragic incident.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) retrieved CCTV footage that provided insights into the last movements of Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder, before his unfortunate demise.
On the evening of Sunday, February 11, Kiptum was recorded visiting three distinct restaurants, according to findings by a team of elite DCI detectives led by Homicide Director Martin Nyuguto.
His first stop was at Alex Inn Restaurant along the Iten-Eldoret highway, where he engaged in conversation with an unidentified middle-aged man before departing for another location.
Later, Kiptum was spotted at the Well Irish Pub and Restaurant situated at Rupa Mall in Eldoret town. Accompanied by Rwandese coach Gervais Hakizimana and a woman identified as Sharon Cheruiyot, the marathoner arrived at approximately 6 pm and left around 8:58 pm.
Testimonies from patrons of the Well Irish Pub and Restaurant revealed Kiptum’s frequent visits to the establishment.
Following their departure from Rupa Mall, Kiptum and his companions proceeded to Grand Miarmir Guest House in Annex, located approximately 14 kilometers away from Rupa Mall along the Eldoret-Nairobi highway.
During their time at Grand Miarmir Guest House, Kiptum, his coach, and Sharon Cheruiyot enjoyed a meal consisting of meat and boiled bananas. An employee at the guest house recounted, “He arrived here at around 9.12 pm and parked his vehicle then ordered food, meat and bananas, and ate it all before leaving here at around 10.15 pm.”
Records from the guest house’s gate confirmed Kiptum’s departure at around 10.25 pm, just 45 minutes before the fatal crash along the Eldoret-Kaptagat Road at approximately 11 pm.
Survivor Sharon Cheruiyot disputed claims of a malfunctioning vehicle, asserting that she alerted Kiptum about the vehicle veering off the road from the back seat.
Unfortunately, Kiptum couldn’t rectify the situation in time, leading to the tragic accident. Law enforcement authorities concurred with Cheruiyot’s account, ruling out foul play in the incident.
