Former President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the CBK Amendment Bill, 2021 into law in 2021.
This meant that online lenders would be regulated by the CBK, and they would have to follow a slew of rules.
On March 18, 2022, the regulations were published. This was also the deadline for all online lenders to apply for a license.
Ten applicants have been approved and licensed thus far. Others are in various stages of the review process.
The following are the licensed online lenders who are permitted to offer digital loans to Kenyans:
- Getcash Capital Limited
- Kweli Smart Solutions Limited
- Sokohela Limited
- Giando Africa Limited, trades as Flash Credit Africa
- Ceres Tech Limited
- MyWagepay Limited
