Francis Atwoli, the secretary general of COTU, has urged Kenyans to support Ruto’s president, recognizing that he outsmarted the Azimio One Kenya Coalition in the just-concluded August 9 election.
The nation should learn to accept and cooperate with democratically elected leaders, said Atwoli, who was Ruto’s harshest critic during the campaigns.
“I told people to get used to Raila’s voice, I didn’t know I would come back home to tell them to get used to Ruto’s voice. But Ruto outsmarted us,” he said while speaking at a funeral in Khwisero, Kakamega County.
“Our father [leader] is Wiliam Samoei Ruto, we have to accept him,” he said.
Atwoli asserted that the sizable audiences they attracted did not turn out in overwhelming numbers to vote and acknowledged that it had to be God’s doing.
“I walked with Raila everywhere and I was sure that Raila would emerge victorious, we thought we had people on our side. We did not know how to play good politics,” Atwoli said.
