US-Iraqi Raid Targets IS Leadership in Iraq: 15 Militants Killed

Iraqi security forces inspect the wreckage of an armed drone intercepted by Iraq’s air defenses in Kirkuk, Iraq, on August 29, 2024.

In Summary:

  • A US-led operation in western Iraq has resulted in the deaths of 15 Islamic State operatives. The mission aimed at disrupting and degrading the group’s leadership.
  • Seven US soldiers were injured, with their conditions not life-threatening, according to a US defense official. This operation follows recent IS-linked attacks in Europe, including incidents in Germany and Austria.

In a significant joint operation, US and Iraqi forces have killed 15 Islamic State (IS) operatives in western Iraq. The raid, which took place early Thursday morning, was described by US Central Command (Centcom) as targeting key members of IS leadership.

Centcom stated, “This operation targeted ISIS leaders to disrupt and degrade ISIS’ ability to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against Iraqi civilians, as well as U.S. citizens, allies, and partners throughout the region and beyond.”

The operation involved air strikes and an airborne assault on IS hideouts located in desert and cave areas.

According to the Iraqi military, “air strikes targeted the hideouts, followed by an airborne operation.”

All hideouts, weapons, and logistical support were destroyed, explosive belts were safely detonated, and important documents, identification papers, and communication devices were seized.

American and Iraqi troops encountered IS members armed with “numerous weapons, grenades and explosive ‘suicide’ belts,” as reported by Centcom.

There have been no indications of civilian casualties from the operation.

Seven US soldiers sustained injuries during the raid. A defense official confirmed that the injuries were not life-threatening, with some resulting from falls rather than direct combat.

This operation comes in the wake of recent IS-related violence. A Syrian refugee in Germany carried out a stabbing attack that left three dead and eight wounded.

Additionally, authorities in Austria disrupted a plot to attack a Taylor Swift concert, involving an Austrian who had pledged allegiance to IS.

Despite significant losses in territory, IS continues to pose a threat through its online propaganda, which continues to inspire attacks.

The US-led coalition’s efforts have largely weakened the group, but it remains a concern for global security.

Currently, around 2,500 US troops are deployed in Iraq in an advisory role to prevent IS from reconstituting and to manage the influence of Iran-backed militias.

Discussions about ending US military operations in Iraq are ongoing, influenced by upcoming US elections.

This raid highlights the ongoing global efforts to counter IS and mitigate its impact on international security.
