The Meru County Assembly was the scene of a musical celebration on Thursday afternoon as members voted to impeach Governor Kawira Mwangaza for the third time.

Immediately after the speaker declared that the “Ayes have it and the motion is passed and the governor stands impeached by the County Assembly of Meru,” the MCAs rose from their seats and started singing to Evangelist Reuben Kigame’s song ‘Enda Nasi’.

The impeachment motion was moved by nominated MCA Zipporah Kinya, who accused Mwangaza of gross violations of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office. Kinya cited various allegations, including Mwangaza’s illegal revocation of the appointment of the secretary of the county public service board and her failure to appoint the chairpersons of several county boards.

The motion was seconded by minority leader Mwenda Ithili, and ultimately passed with 49 MCAs voting in favor, 17 voting to save Mwangaza, and 3 members failing to avail themselves for the vote.

This marks the third time in two years that Mwangaza has been impeached by the Meru County Assembly. On the previous two occasions, the Senate had saved her, citing a lack of sufficient evidence. Mwangaza will now await the Senate’s decision on the latest impeachment.
