A tragic road accident on the Kagio-Baricho road in Thumaita, Ndia, Kirinyaga County, claimed the life of one person and left three others seriously injured.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night when the vehicle, a Suzuki Swift, rolled multiple times before landing in a ditch.

Kirinyaga West (Ndia) Sub-County Police Commander Moses Koskei reported that the vehicle was being driven by Monica Kiragu, a nurse at Baricho Health Centre.

The vehicle had three other occupants: Diana Muriuki, a nurse from Sagana Sub-County Hospital, and two men, Boniface Wanjohi and Joseph Mbogo.

Koskei stated, “The vehicle was heading towards Baricho from Kagio town when it lost control at Thumaita, veered off the road, and landed upside down. The driver, Monica Kiragu, was seriously injured in the head and was found unconscious.”

The three passengers also suffered injuries, with Diana Muriuki sustaining deep cuts on her right hand.

Boniface Wanjohi sustained minor injuries to his lips and complained of chest and hip pain, while Joseph Mbogo reported chest, stomach pain, and head bruises.

The injured were initially taken to Baricho Health Centre before being transferred to Kerugoya Level 5 County Hospital.

Unfortunately, the driver, Monica Kiragu, succumbed to her injuries. Her body was moved to the Kerugoya Level 5 Hospital mortuary for an autopsy, and the heavily damaged vehicle was towed to the Sagana police station.

Koskei also warned motorists against speeding on Ndia roads to prevent such accidents and confirmed that investigations into the incident are underway.
