Nairobi Court Releases 109 Protesters on KSh 500 Cash Bail for Drunk and Disorderly Charges
In Summary:
1) 109 individuals arrested during anti-government protests in Nairobi were charged with being drunk and disorderly, and released on KSh 500 cash bail each.
2) The case is set for a pre-trial mention on July 30, 2024, with a lawyer questioning the plausibility of 109 people being simultaneously drunk and disorderly in Nairobi’s CBD.
A Nairobi court has released 109 Kenyans who were arrested during anti-government demonstrations on cash bail.
On Wednesday, July 17, the protesters were arraigned before a Milimani Law Court and charged with being drunk and disorderly.
According to the charge sheet seen by Topnews.co.ke, the 109 protesters were accused of causing a disturbance on Tuesday, July 16.
Lawyer James K WaNjeri, representing several Gen Z individuals arrested and charged with protesting, shared the charge sheet on his X.com (formerly Twitter) account.
“On July 16, at around 1553 hours along Moi Avenue in Nairobi within Nairobi county, you were found drunk and disorderly by staggering and shouting, thereby disturbing members of the public,” the charge sheet read.
“Bail set at 500 shillings each. We have 109 accused persons in court. Can 109 people be drunk and disorderly in the CBD together? YA Kenya ni mengi,” said Lawyer James K WaNjeri.
