Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has cautioned Gen Z about forces that may attempt to weaken their resolve in demanding improved governance.
Mutunga described Gen Z as a revolutionary mass movement that will face numerous challenges if it aligns with any faction of the ruling class.
“I believe that the broad program of what the movement stands for must now attack all barons in the two factions. The movement will die if it is aligned with any of the two factions,” he asserted.
He advised the youth to maintain their focus on long-term goals and ensure that every Gen Z member is a registered voter.
“Change is a marathon, and as you protest, you should not lose focus on your goals,” he emphasized.
In a post on his X page, Mutunga also urged Gen Z to protect those who might be targeted and to demand justice for innocent Kenyans who have been killed.
He stressed the need for accountability and legal action against those responsible for deaths and injuries during protests.
“It is time for accountability. Those who have paid the ultimate price for the constitution must be compensated,” Mutunga stated.
The approval of the Finance Bill, 2024, which introduced new tax measures, prompted Gen Z to hold protests across the country.
On June 25, 2024, the youth made a bold move by breaching Parliament security and infiltrating the building.
Subsequently, President William Ruto withdrew the Bill and dissolved the Cabinet.
