At the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, during the signing ceremony of the IEBC Amendment Bill, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka issued a stark warning to the Kenya Kwanza government about the rising influence of Generation Z in Kenya’s political landscape.
Musyoka emphasized the urgent need to address the concerns of young Kenyans, stating, “If we are not careful, all of us will be thrown out by Gen Zs because they say they’ve come of age.”
They say they are the leaders of tomorrow, we are leaders now. We can’t wish them away.”
The Wiper leader highlighted recent youth-led protests as evidence of critical issues still affecting citizens.
He praised the Gen Z demonstrators for their patriotism, noting, “They came in the form of Gen Z but they are Kenyans, in fact they are carrying the national flags, they have done it better than we did.”
Musyoka urged President William Ruto to implement the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO), emphasizing the importance of the newly signed IEBC bill.
He also called for a fresh round of dialogue to address underlying issues facing Kenyans, suggesting a return to the Bomas of Kenya for comprehensive discussions.
“Mr. President, I want to urge that we look at our country afresh,” Musyoka said, stressing the impossibility of ignoring what he termed the “Gen Z revolution.”
The event, which saw the signing of the IEBC (Amendment) Bill, 2024, into law by President Ruto, was attended by various political leaders, including Azimio’s Raila Odinga and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
This gathering of diverse political figures underscored the significance of the moment and the growing recognition of youth concerns in Kenya’s political discourse.
