In Summary:

1) Senator Edwin Sifuna opposes the government’s proposal to raise salaries for state officers.

2) Sifuna stated he would not advocate for a salary increase during a national call to lessen taxpayer burden.

3) The SRC’s plan to raise salaries for MPs and other officials will take effect on July 1, but the President and his deputy’s salaries will remain unchanged.

Reacting to the recent report on salary hikes for senior state officials, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna stated that he neither requested nor requires the proposed increase.

The salary adjustments were announced by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

“Let’s be clear about this. The SRC is suggesting a Ksh 14,000 addition to my salary. I didn’t ask for it, and I don’t need it. It’s still money, in a country where many have no income, but for perspective, I pay nearly Ksh 300,000 in income tax every month,” Sifuna explained.

He further elaborated, “I will not fight for an extra Ksh 14,000 when the whole country is advocating for reduced taxpayer burden. I don’t want this Ksh 14,000. Let it stay.”

The new salary structure, effective from July 1, includes no change for the President and his deputy.

However, the Prime Cabinet Secretary and other Cabinet Secretaries’ salaries will increase to Ksh 990,000 from Ksh 957,000.

Principal Secretaries, the Inspector General, and the Director General of NIS will now earn Ksh 819,844, up from Ksh 792,519.

The Deputy Inspector General of Kenya Police and Administration Police, along with the Director of Criminal Investigations, will see their salaries rise to Ksh 684,233 from Ksh 652,742.

Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate will receive Ksh 1,208,362 monthly, up from Ksh 1,185,327. Deputy Speakers will now earn Ksh 966,690 monthly, while Majority and Minority leaders will receive Ksh 800,019.

Members of the National Assembly and Senate will see their gross salaries increase to Ksh 739,600 from Ksh 725,502.
