Six newborns lost their lives in a devastating fire at a baby care hospital in New Delhi, India’s capital, local authorities confirmed on Sunday. The blaze, which erupted late Saturday night, quickly spread through the facility located in the city’s eastern sector.

Television footage captured firefighters battling the flames as they worked to extinguish the fire. The Delhi fire department reported to news agency ANI, partially owned by Reuters, that six additional children were rescued and transferred to another hospital, with one currently on a ventilator. The fire has been contained.

Delhi police have reported that the hospital’s owner has absconded.

“The causes of the incident are being investigated and whoever is responsible for this negligence will not be spared,” Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated on the social media platform X.

This tragic event comes just a day after another fire claimed 27 lives at an entertainment center in Gujarat, a western state of India. Local media indicated that two individuals have been detained in connection with the Gujarat incident.
