Cherera Four: NADCO Calls for Ruto and Raila Intervention

Summary:
The National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) has recommended a resolution for the four former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners implicated in alleged misconduct during the 2022 elections. NADCO proposes an amicable settlement overseen by President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga to promote national cohesion.

The commissioners in question are former IEBC vice chairperson Juliana Cherera, Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit, and Francis Wanderi. They faced accusations of manipulating election results, leading to their forced resignation. The NADCO report suggests that, despite the claims made against them, their matter should be referred to Ruto and Raila for an out-of-court settlement.

This recommendation comes as a potential relief for the four commissioners who contested the declaration of Ruto as the winner, citing concerns about the transparency of the results announced by then IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Cherera, Nyang’aya, and Wanderi resigned, while Masit underwent a tribunal investigation into her conduct during the polls. The tribunal, led by Justice Aggrey Muchelule, recommended Masit’s removal from office, stating that the accusations against her and her fellow commissioners were proven.

Raila Odinga has been advocating for the reinstatement and payment of the four commissioners. The proposed amicable settlement could pave the way for discussions on their reinstatement with full benefits, potentially bringing closure to a chapter marked by electoral disputes and resignations within the IEBC.
