Bola Tinubu won the most votes, according to the final results, putting him on the path to becoming the president of Africa’s largest democracy.
The ruling party in Nigeria’s Bola Tinubu received the most votes, according to the final results announced on Wednesday.
With the results, Tinubu will almost certainly be elected president of the African democracy with the largest population
In order to be sworn in as president of Nigeria, Tinubu must receive 25% of the votes cast in at least two-thirds of the country’s 36 states and the capital, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
There will be a runoff between the top two candidates if that threshold is not reached.
Tinubu ran for the All Progressives Congress, which is the party of outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari.
He received 8.8 million votes, compared to 6.9 million for Peoples Democratic Party candidate Atiku Abubakar. Peter Obi of the Labour Party finished third with 6.1 million votes.
Voting delays have been criticized.
Voting was largely peaceful but plagued by long delays at many polling stations, which contributed to the slow release of results over several days.
Nigeria’s electoral commission rejected Abubakar and Obi’s allegations of vote tampering and their call for fresh elections.
“results from the states point to a free, fair, and credible process, contrary to the insinuation by both parties,” the INEC stated.
