Summary:

According to police, Obed was killed by a mob on Sunday after hacking to death his widowed lover, Corodina Mukabunane, a mother of five.

Authorities in Uganda’s Kyegegwa District are investigating the death of a 35-year-old man who was beaten to death by a crowd on suspicion of murdering his 38-year-old lover, whom he accused of infidelity.

Sunday Obed, a peasant from Butale village in Uganda’s Kigambo Sub County, Kyegegwa District, was beaten by a crowd on Friday, just a day after reportedly killing Corodina Mukabunane, a widow and mother of five.

According to Mr. Vincent Twesige, spokesman for the Rwenzori west police, Mukabunane left her house in Butale village to travel to Kyafaka village for a school event on Thursday and returned late at night with Mr. Obed.

“One of her children came out of the house when she heard her mother’s voice outside. ” Mr. Vincent Twesige said

“She said she saw Obed standing with her mother outside before an argument ensued between them.” Mr. Twesige explained

Obed accused Mukabunane of infidelity.

“As they were still arguing, Obed pulled a machete out of his shirt and cut Mukabunane’s head off,” Mr Twesige added

After that, Obed reportedly fled and went into hiding.

But after hearing about what had transpired, the locals organized a search effort throughout the night and discovered him Friday morning in the Butale swamp.

“After angry residents found him hiding in the swamp, police overpowered them by firing bullets in air to disperse the mob.” Mr Twesige explained

“However, he escaped from the hands of our officers before residents followed him and stoned him to death. By the time our officers arrived, it was too late,” Mr Twesige added.

He claimed that as investigations went on, the bodies of Obed and Mukabunane were picked up and transferred to the mortuary at Kyegegwa hospital.

After the passing of her husband James Barutsya in 2017, one of Mukabunane’s in-laws, Mr. Henry Byaruhanga, revealed to this reporter that she fell in love with Obed.

Yet as time went on, he began to accuse her with infidelity.
