The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has hinted at a fare hike for public service vehicle users (psv).
This has occurred a day after the government said it will gradually over time do away with the fuel subsidy programme and the Matatu Owners Association has even indicated that bus tickets could increase even further.
Following reports in newspapers, the association’s chairperson, Simon Kimutai, has claimed that fares on many routes in Nairobi will increase from between Kes.20 and Kes 50.
The Matatu Owners Association has requested its members across the country to raise transportation fees.
According to the Energy and Petroleum Authority (EPRA), a litre of petrol costs kes.159.12 in Nairobi, diesel costs kes.140.0, and kerosene costs kes.127.94.
Kimutai has stated that if fuel prices remain high, fewer Kenyans will commute, making the government the loser in the long term.
“If fuel prices are excessively high, fewer people will commute.” This would mean that less fuel would be purchased, and fewer automobiles would be on the road. The government would lose in the long term due to the taxes it would be unable to collect,” Kimutai stated.
